Molten & Fudgy Nutella Mug Cake (Dairy Free + Vegan!)
This ultra molten Nutella mug cake is filled in the center with warmed dairy free chocolate hazelnut spread and only needs a touch of dairy free milk (no eggs nor oil!) to make!
Whenever I want a quick sweet treat, I’m always leaning towards making mug cakes. I have a vegan chocolate chip cookie mug cake, vegan Funfetti mug cake, and of course, a vegan chocolate mug cake.
So naturally, a Nutella mug cake recipe sounded like a great idea for an easy dessert next!
This molten and rich 90 second mug cake is made with just flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and dairy free milk. Super simple ingredients right?
Then filled with (a vegan) Nutella before cooking so that the Nutella gets really molten and melty.
The cake is rich and fluffy, while the Nutella makes it ultra decadent. Plus it’s single serve (yep, you don’t need to share this one 🙃). And you don’t need any eggs nor oil! How easy is that?
Easy Pantry Ingredients
What I love so much about this Nutella mug cake is that it actually only requires one refrigerated item: the dairy free milk!
No eggs needed whatsoever. So here’s what you need:
- Flour: You can use all purpose flour, oat flour, or gluten free 1:1 baking flour.
- Cocoa powder: I like to use Valhrona cocoa powder- it’s extra rich!
- Baking powder: To help our mug cake rise in the microwave.
- Sugar: I use Florida Crystals granulated sugar to keep it vegan. You can also sub in coconut sugar or brown sugar!
- Sea salt: Just a pinch to balance the sweet.
- Dairy free milk: You can use soy milk, oat milk, almond milk, or the like.
- Vegan Nutella: I have an AMAZING creamy and rich dairy free vegan Nutella recipe on the blog that I highly recommend. Otherwise, you can use Nocciolata’s dairy free Nutella! I get that one at Whole Foods.
Overview: How to make Nutella Mug Cake Step by Step Photos:
You’ll start with a microwave-safe mug (super important!) and gathering all of your ingredients. Next:
Can I make this vegan mug cake gluten free?
Absolutely! You can use oat flour or King Arthur’s Measure for Measure flour. Those two are my favorites for this cake!
Can I bake this Nutella mug cake instead?
Absolutely! If you’d prefer to make your Nutella mug cake in the oven rather than in the microwave, you’ll switch to an oven-safe ramekin or baking dish (preferably similar in size to the mug).
Then preheat the oven to 350F. You’ll follow the instructions for making the cake batter in the ramekins, then simply bake for 10 minutes. So easy!
Toppings:
You can top your finished vegan Nutella mug cake with:
- Dairy free whipped cream
- Raspberries, strawberries, or blueberries
- A scoop of ice cream (I like Forager Project’s cashew milk vanilla ice cream!)
- Vegan chocolate chips
- More vegan Nutella!

Description
This ultra molten Nutella mug cake is filled in the center with warmed dairy free chocolate hazelnut spread and only needs a touch of dairy free milk (no eggs nor oil!) to make!
Ingredients
- 4 tbsp (45 g) all purpose flour, or gluten-free 1:1 baking flour
- 1 tbsp (6 g) cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp (24 g) coconut sugar, granulated sugar or 1 tsp stevia*
- 1 tsp baking powder
- Pinch sea salt
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) dairy-free milk (like oat milk, soy milk, or almond milk)
- Optional add ins: vegan chocolate chips
- 2 tbsp vegan Nutella
Instructions
- Whisk: In a large mug, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and sea salt. Make sure that there are no clumps of flour visible.
- Mix the batter: Pour the dairy free milk and mix until there are no more dry clumps, being sure to scrape the bottom of the mug as well to prevent any dry spots. Stir in the chocolate chips here too if you’d like! You can also mix in 1 tbsp of the Nutella for an overall Nutella flavor, or just save both tablespoons for the middle part 🙂
- Spoon in the Nutella: Add the tablespoons of Nutella to the middle of the batter.
- Microwave: Microwave for just 90-120 seconds. Alternatively, you can bake these cakes for 10 minutes at 350F.
- Serve and enjoy! Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
Baking instructions: Preheat the oven to 350F. Follow steps 1-3 using an oven-safe ramekin or baking dish. Bake for 10 minutes.
Gluten free: Swap in oat flour or King Arthur Measure for Measure flour.
