Homemade Healthy Mocha Latte Recipe
Easy and rich homemade healthy mocha latte recipe, made with espresso, chocolate, and coconut milk! Perfect for a chilly morning and when you need an extra boost!
My favorite part about the holiday times: chocolate. In cookies, in brownies, in candy, and espress-cially in drinks.
If you haven’t noticed on my Instagram stories, I’m highly caffeinated most of the time. And one of my all time favorite caffeinated beverages happens to be a mocha latte.
So I thought that we could use with a healthy homemade version on the blog, don’t you think?
This post is sponsored by Calphalon, and all thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make The Banana Diaries possible!
The best homemade mocha latte recipe
I like to think of myself as a coffee snob. Well, both my grandma and I, really. We love coffee, we love espresso, and we’ll have both at any time of day.
So when I say that the Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine is the best espresso machine I’ve ever used, I mean it. And this is coming from someone who used to work as a barista.
The Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine is a dream to use. All of the settings are preset for you to just easily switch the knob if you want to make one shot of espresso or two. Then say you want to add in water, like an americano, or make some steamed milk for your latte. Just switch the knob again! It’s now available at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, which is just another dream come true because I basically live at that store haha!
During the holidays, I’m basically a Bed, Bath, & Beyond catalog.
Now back to these mocha lattes.
So you have the ultra rich and flavor espresso from the espresso machine, coupled with melted chocolate, and with a coconut milk pour-over…I mean…this is truly the only thing I want in my holiday mug.
That and some eggnog 😉
How do you make a healthy mocha?
Like I mentioned earlier, making these healthier mocha lattes is as easy as making your morning cup of coffee.
Even making the steamed milk is easy! First, let’s go over the ingredients, then I’ll walk you through the steps, and finally, I’ll give you a few tips and tricks at the end!
Healthy homemade mocha latte ingredients
For these naturally dairy free mocha latte drinks, you’ll need the following:
- ground espresso
- chocolate chips (make sure they’re vegan if that’s what you’d like to make!)
- coconut milk
- marshmallows for topping
That’s it! Real simple right?
How to make a mocha latte with an espresso machine
I used to think using an espresso machine was really hard before my barista days, but it’s actually quite simple, and Calphalon makes it even easier.
Your vegan mocha latte will be ready in no time! Here’s what you need to do:
- Turn on your Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine and wait for the ‘ready’ light to light up.
- Fill the portafilter with espresso, then place the 15-bar Italian pump locked into place.
- Fill your mug with chocolate chips or chocolate chunks, and place it underneath where the espresso will come out.
- Switch the knob to ‘one shot’ and allow the machine to make the espresso. When it’s done, switch the knob back to ready.
- If you’re making multiple cups, make the espresso first, and then move onto steaming the milk.
Once all of your espresso is made, then you can make the steamed coconut milk:
- To steam the coconut milk, fill the milk jug with 1/3 cup coconut milk.
- Pull the steamer out and place the steamer into the milk canister.
- Switch the knob to steam and hold the milk jug steady as the steam flows through.
- Once you’ve created foam, switch the knob of the espresso machine back to ready, and pour the steamed coconut milk into your mug.
Of course, you’ll definitely have to top with marshmallows. I mean, you can’t have cocoa or even a mocha without some marshmallows!
Tips & Tricks for making a vegan mocha latte
- You can absolutely use your favorite chocolate here. I personally love a low sugar, stevia-sweetened one, but I’ve also used 100% cacao chocolate (another favorite, and ultra rich), and a slightly milder chocolate (around 50%). Use what works best for you!
- You can use chocolate chips or chunks of a chocolate bar (hello, Halloween candy!)!
- For the espresso, I recommend purchasing ground espresso beans, but you can also use ground coffee beans. It’s the same bean, just a different process for making it! If you use the coffee beans, it won’t be the most potent espresso you’ll ever have, but it will still be very strong, thanks to Calphalon Temp iQ Espresso Machine’s 15-bar Italian pump.
- I recommend using full fat coconut milk. It’s much easier to create foam! If you don’t like coconut milk, you can use any dairy free milk that you like.
- You can find vegan marshmallows (which is what I use) at your local grocery store or online!
I hope you love this easy homemade mocha latte as much as I do! They’re seriously so much fun to make and have, especially in this chilly weather!
