Healthy Chocolate Chip Scones {Gluten Free}
These tender healthy chocolate chip scones are easy and completely gluten free and refined sugar free with a dairy free option! Perfect for a weekend brunch, these scones are incredibly sweet!
I’m going to be honest. Making scones used to really intimidate me. I mean, how the heck do you get a scone to be so flaky and tender?! Plus, kneading dough always made me nervous for creating a mess in the kitchen so I just veered away from making chocolate chip scones for the longest time…
Until I decided enough was enough! If I’m going to get good at baking, I need to try all types of baking recipes and not just stick to what I know. So I ventured outside of my comfort zone.
I was brave enough to create these healthy chocolate chip scones!! Let me tell you, my opinion on making scones has completely changed. Not only are these healthy chocolate chip scones incredibly easy, but they taste phenomenal and are sure to please a crowd! Let’s dive in as to why 🙂

The Best Scone Recipe
I will make a bold statement. I will state that these healthy chocolate chip scones are the best scones you will ever taste.
At least, I think so! 😉
These gluten free chocolate chip scones basically taste like a big, tender chocolate chip cookie that you can have for breakfast or brunch and pair with a big ol’ cup of coffee (like I may be doing as I write this post!).
What’s more, these chocolate chip scones are insanely easy, which is super surprising for being gluten free and having the option of being dairy free! They come together within 45 minutes, no chill time required!
Now, what’s the flour that’s so great and is making these scones taste so dang good? Well…we’re using oat flour in this recipe!
Yep, so these are technically like chocolate chip oatmeal scones, except they taste nothing like oatmeal, so don’t worry! These scones will still taste like you pulled them right out of a bakery 🙂
Healthy Chocolate Chip Scones Ingredients
Ground Oat Flour: this is one of my favorite gluten free flours to use for all recipes. My second favorite is buckwheat! Don’t worry, your healthy chocolate chip scones won’t taste like oatmeal, but they will definitely come out nice and tender thanks to the ground oat flour! You can purchase ground oat flour in any baking section of a grocery store or you can make your own simply by blending your oats in a food processor or blender, like I do! If you’re going that method, make sure to use 1 cup extra oats than it says for flour in the recipe, meaning if it says 2.5 cups of oat flour, blend 3.5 cups of whole oats 😉
Coconut Flour: this is key! Do not skip the coconut flour! What I’ve found is that coconut flour goes really well with oat flour, especially when absorbing extra moisture. Coconut flour here helps to create that flaky texture that scones are known for, so don’t swap this baby out! Coconut flour is pretty affordable too, usually $2-3 per bag at a grocery store, so it’s definitely worth it. I don’t have any recommendations if you’re going to swap in a flour here, so I would just stick with coconut!
Egg: for this recipe, we’ll be using one egg, cold! If, however, you are egg free, you can definitely use a ground flaxseed “egg,” and the recipe will turn out just as good 🙂
Butter: if you are dairy free, you can definitely swap in a vegan butter, but make sure that it is cold and stiff. The reason why chocolate chip scones get such an awesome tender texture is due to the chunks of butter that are still within the dough, which is why we will not be letting our butter, vegan or not, get to room temperature! Make sure that your butter is hard! Then what we do is cube the butter into small little quarters…you’ll see in a second!
Almond Milk: dairy free people, rejoice! Because I’ve swapped in almond milk mixed with a tbsp of apple cider vinegar (can use white vinegar here) to create a dairy free buttermilk 🙂 I find that the “buttermilk” gives more fluffiness to these gluten free chocolate chip scones, which is sometimes hard to do when going gluten free, so definitely add in the vinegar! If you’re not dairy free, however, feel free to swap in a regular milk selection (2% or higher)!
Maple Syrup: my favorite sweetener when it comes to refined sugar free sweeteners 🙂 I just love maple syrup! We only use a 1/4 cup maple syrup for these chocolate chip scones so that they’re just sweet enough but not overly sweet, since maple syrup tends to taste sweeter than regular sugar!
Chocolate Chips: well you can’t forget the chocolate chips for gluten free healthy chocolate chip scones! Just a half a cup is perfect for these chocolate chip oatmeal scones 🙂 I love using Lily’s Sweets chocolate chips (my fave), but feel free to use whichever is your favorite and/or easiest!
How to make Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Scones
Now, let’s get down to how we’re going to make these gluten free chocolate chip scones. Truth be told, it’s actually easier than you think! I always used to think that making chocolate chip scones was super intimidating, but it’s totally not.
You just have to know a few tricks!
The scone dough will come out to be the consistency of a cookie dough, which will make it easy for kneading before we shape into a round dough ball and slice into scones!
The trick though, is first whisking all of the flours together and then adding only butter to the mix. Normally, we combine butter with the wet ingredients, but not here! We’re going to be cutting the butter. Let’s get into how to do that.
Getting a tender consistency in scones
So once we’ve whisked our flour together and cubed our stick of butter (1/2 cup) into tiny square, we add the butter to the flour.
Next, using either a fork like I did or a pastry knife, we’re going to sort of mash (the formal word is “cut”) the butter into the flour. The trick here is to leave some chunks of butter uncut (not a full cube, but like a chunk of chocolate in a chocolate chip cookie!) so that the texture of our gluten free healthy chocolate chip scones comes out tender!
It should look like you need to add more liquid to the scone dough, which is perfect. Because we’re going to do that in a second!
Next, you whisk together all of the wet ingredients and pour the wet into dry. Then we mix the dough, either with our hands or a spoon, until it becomes a big doughy scone ball (chocolate chips folded in at this point too!).
Dust your clean surface with some oat flour and begin to knead the ball. It can be sticky at times, so just add a little dusting of extra oat flour as you go.
Shape the chocolate chip scone dough into a flat circle and slice cleanly into 8 scones. Place each scone onto the parchment lined baking sheet, and bake for only 15 minutes.
Voilà! You have gluten free chocolate chip scones that are healthy, easy, and absolutely delicious 🙂
I hope you love these scones as much as I do! If you’re making them for a big brunch, I highly recommend pairing them with a few of these recipes 🙂

Notes
*replacing vegan butter: I have not used coconut oil, but I have tested it with a vegan butter and it works great!
*for egg free: replace 1 egg with 1 tbsp ground flaxseed mixed with 2 tbsp water. Let sit for 5 minutes to coagulate.

They look so yummy! Do you think they could be made vegan? 🙂
Absolutely!! I’ve tried them using both a flax egg and vegan butter at once, and they came out amazing! I haven’t tried coconut oil though, so I can’t vouch for that! But a good vegan butter definitely works 🙂
