Fudgy Paleo Vegan Sweet Potato Brownies
Fudgy and rich Paleo sweet potato brownies that are secretly vegan, nut free, and flourless! Everyone will absolutely love these undetectably healthy allergen friendly brownies!
Not going to lie. I dream of chocolate quite often. In fact, it’s probably my most common dream. And in the form of these Paleo sweet potato brownies no less!
This was one of the first recipes I ever made and shared on The Banana Diaries, so these sweet potato brownies definitely have a special place in my heart.
Plus they’re nut free, dairy free, egg free, and gluten and grain free, so they can definitely please all taste buds, needs, and preferences!
What do sweet potato brownies taste like?
To be honest, you don’t really taste the sweet potato in these brownies. In fact, by the look and taste, you’d never know that sweet potatoes are the base of these healthy brownies!
To me, these brownies taste just extra fudgy and rich (there’s a lot of cacao powder in them), and they’re also surprisingly sweet, even though there is not much added sugar to them.
This is because when sweet potatoes are baked, the natural sugars caramelize, which definitely helps to make a lower sugar and refined sugar free brownie.
The health benefits of sweet potato
Why use sweet potatoes in brownies? Well, they don’t just make an incredibly decadent healthier brownie.
Sweet potato has a lot of wonderful benefits too! Not only are they packed with nutrients, but they also support healthy vision thanks to being full of beta-carotene, and promote a healthy gut!
So rest assured that these vegan sweet potato brownies are more than just a delicious and fun healthy dessert!
What makes these sweet potato brownies Paleo and vegan?
I’m often asked by my extended family as to what makes my recipes Paleo and vegan in general. For these sweet potato brownies in particular, they’re entirely grain-free and gluten free, along with also being soy free and corn free.
This checks the box for Paleo.
These healthy vegan brownies are also entirely egg free, and dairy free, making them fit for anyone who consumes a vegan or vegetarian diet.
But, I’ll be honest, you don’t have to be vegan to love these brownies. In fact, I’m sure you’ll be reaching for these over the beloved Ghiradelli!
Ingredients to make Paleo Vegan Brownies
For these sweet potato brownies, you’ll need a few simple plant based ingredients:
- Sweet Potato: trust me on this one, the sweet potato is SO key here! It’s what makes these Paleo brownies fudgey and sweet without adding any additional sugar! You can use either an orange sweet potato or a white sweet potato, but the choice is really up to you! Make sure you really bake your sweet potato right, allowing the natural sugars to caramelize. If you need some help on this, check out my post on how to properly cook a sweet potato. Do not use a microwave! It will kill the taste!
- Cacao Powder: if you can, I would recommend using cacao powder over cocoa powder (sorry, Hershey’s). Cacao powder tends to be richer in taste and will lend itself to a more chocolatey brownie (I know, I know, as if brownies aren’t already chocolatey!).
- Coconut or cassava Flour: I’ve tried these sweet potato brownies with both cassava flour and coconut flour- you can use either! If you’re coconut free, definitely use cassava flour. Cassava is a grain free nut free “flour” that’s been ground from the cassava root. Cassava is not the same as tapioca flour, though, so be sure to get cassava.
- Nut or coconut butter: you can use either your favorite Paleo nut butter or coconut butter if you’re going nut free. You can also use sunflower seed butter if you can’t have nuts nor coconut.
- Coconut Oil: you can either use coconut oil or vegan butter, so if you can’t have coconut, go with your favorite coconut-free vegan butter.
- Flaxseed: this will be mixed with water to create a flaxseed “egg.”
How to make sweet potato brownies
First, begin by baking your sweet potato the right way. Make sure the flesh of the sweet potato is very soft.
Then whip out your food processor and puree the sweet potato until it’s a mash. This helps to make sure that the sweet potato isn’t stringy when you bake it.
Next, add in the rest of the ingredients: cacao powder, coconut flour, nut or coconut butter, coconut oil, flaxseed eggs, maple syrup, and standard baking ingredients (baking powder, sea salt, vanilla extract!). Puree until smooth.
Pour your batter into a 8×8″ baking dish that’s been greased and place the brownies into the oven at 375F for 35 minutes.
When it’s done, remove from the oven and let cool before serving! Drizzle with some melted chocolate if you’d like 🙂
Recommended tools for making fudgy brownies
For these brownies, I recommend using:
Food processor or high speed blender
Rubber spatula
8×8 baking pan
Parchment paper
How long do sweet potato brownies last?
Because these brownies are both Paleo and vegan, they’ll actually last a bit long than if they were to contain eggs and dairy.
Store these sweet potato brownies in an airtight container for up to 5 days at room temperature, a week in the fridge, or 3 months in the freezer.
To reheat from the freezer, preheat the oven to 350F and place a brownie on a piece of tin foil. Bake for 5-7 minutes and serve!
I hope you loved these brownies as much as I do 🙂 I highly suggest making some brownies ala mode using my Paleo vegan ice cream or maybe the brookie is your vibe and you want to mash up these Paleo brownies with my Paleo cookie skillet 😉
The possibilities are endless! Let me know how you made these in the comments below! As always, I love to see your beautiful creations on Instagram and Pinterest, so be sure to tag me there.
Happy Baking!

WOW!!! These are my favorite brownies, hands down! I’m totally gonna make a brownie sundae with the sweet potato ice cream, because sweet potatoes = pure magic 🙂
Yay!! I hope you love them 🙂 Perfect idea to make a brownie sundae!! That’s what I’m doing!
Thank you for this recipe!!! They are delicious! 🙂 How do you recommend storing these? Is it okay to be left out on the counter?
Hi Gabby! Aw I’m so happy thank you! You can store them in an airtight container on the counter for up to 4 days, or in the fridge for a week!
Hello! I’m going to make this healthy recipe but I would like to ask if I can use oat flour instead of coconut flour? Thanks in advance!!
Hi Leoni! I haven’t personally tried this recipe with oat flour so I can’t speak to the results. However, if it were me, I’d swap in 1 cup oat flour. Again, I haven’t personally tried this so I can’t guarantee anything! I would recommend sticking with the coconut flour if you can!
Thanks a lot! Just wanted to make the brownies today but I will wait until tomorrow to buy some coconut flour!
Greetings from Greece!!
Hi ! I find that coconut butter is expensive where I live. Can I sub real butter for the coconut butter ? Dairy is not an issue if it’s just my family. Thanks.
Cathi from MN
Hi Cathi! Not a problem at all! I would recommend swapping in a nut butter over the butter just because I haven’t personally tried this option yet and I don’t want to recommend anything without guaranteeing the result! I would assume it would work, but I can’t say 100% for sure! However, I have tried this with a nut butter at equal ratios and it works perfectly! Let me know how it goes and enjoy!
Hello! These look great! I am allergic to nuts AND coconut (sad face), but could I use whole wheat flour instead? I can use sunflower seed butter for the coconut butter. Your photos are super beautiful, too. Looks very delicious and I can’t wait to see if I can make these!!
Aw I completely understand!! Yes, you can absolutely use flour, I would recommend all purpose if you have it on hand (I don’t use whole wheat flour much but know it acts differently!), but if not, you can use wheat, and you can definitely swap in sunflower seed butter for coconut! Thank you so much for the sweet words too, that truly means the world to me! Enjoy!
Thank you so much and I sure will!!
Hi! I’m planning to bake these for my kids tonight. But due to the pandemic, can’t find the coconut butter or nut butter. What can I substitute it with? And can I use honey instead of maple syrup?
Thank you
Hi there! Oh I hope you love them! You can substitute the coconut butter or nut butter with sunflower seed butter if available, but if not, you can also use vegan butter, just make sure it’s softened to room temperature! And absolutely re: honey! Feel free to swap that in at an equal ratio 🙂 Enjoy!
